When Beachgoers Fled Attack, Widely-Shared Picture Shows Lifeguard Dashing ‘Full Speed’ To the Location.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong inhabitant of Bondi, has always considered the renowned shoreline as her personal space. On that particular weekend night, she, like many neighbors, heard pops ringing out around the suburb.

“Everyone did, but I thought it was still too bright and there was nothing visible,” Ching recounts. She left her residence, she witnessed people “streaming up Bondi Road”. The looks on display made it clear something was wrong.

Positioned on the road, speaking to a pair who had run up the incline still dripping wet, she heard someone coming up at her rear. It was a rescuer, dashing to Bondi without shoes from the nearby Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while holding a defibrillator.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I just saw this blur of blue,” she recounts. “He was simply racing by. It was just him moving in the path that all the others was trying to flee, and hauling that sizeable pack and barefoot … He moved into something that undoubtedly every part of you would tell you to move in the reverse way.

“Just no hesitation, but just totally maximum effort running.”

A Symbol of Courage Amidst Crisis

The photograph taken by Ching of the lifeguard, since identified as Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as one of many instances of courage in the aftermath of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, a fellow lifeguard, noted that Doolan, called “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to back up the other members at Bondi, as well as to work with other rescuers, police and ambulance crews attending to many victims.

Local Response and Solidarity

Doolan’s actions was a single example among several to be shared by the local area, with the beach facility beside the site of the incident becoming a makeshift medical station. It was shared that fellow lifeguards were also seen responding bravely, such as entering the surf to assist people needing help.

After the tragedy, messages of gratitude flooded in. A social media message shared thanks for the lifeguards who exhibited that “compassion will always triumph over evil”.

The squad of lifeguards later shared a message, explaining they were “coming to terms with what transpired”.

“We are grateful all for your thoughtful messages and encouragement. We are deeply moved by the compassion for our responders,” the group wrote. “In time, we will tell our tales in the belief that it supports those impacted.”

Official Recognition

Waverley council, the administrative organization that oversees many full-time lifeguards, said that the staff acted heroically from the second the incident commenced until late that nighttime.

“We have heard so many moving accounts, but the viral photo of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help preserve life is extraordinary,” commented a mayor.

“The team show selflessness every day in keeping our iconic beaches protected for the public, but what we observed on that evening should be highly praised.

“As we grieve and grapple with the atrocity of this brutal and barbaric tragedy, I think it is crucial that we reflect on just how much light we have witnessed in the presence of such evil.”
