Virginia's New Governor Establishes a Landmark as First Female Governor

Throughout two and a half centuries, Virginia has had seventy-four governors, each one of them men. This week, Abigail Spanberger overcame this longstanding tradition by securing the position as the first female governor in the commonwealth's history.

Centered Around Economic Concerns and Targeted Criticism

Ex- US congresswoman and CIA case officer won with a election strategy that stressed cost-of-living issues and carefully opposed Donald Trump's policies rather than the individual.

Beginnings and Academic Journey

Born in the Garden State on a summer day in 1979, she moved to a Virginia community at her early teens. Her dad was an military serviceman who later worked in police work; her mother was a nurse and volunteer.

She attended the Virginia's flagship university, receiving a degree in French literature. Upon completing her studies, she worked briefly as a educator before turning to a life of service.

“I grew up understanding that I wanted to follow in my dad’s footsteps and I did,” she informed attendees at a gathering in Norfolk, Virginia last Saturday.

Public Service Career

At the federal agency, she investigated involving drugs, abusers and money launderers. She executed court mandates, often being the only woman on the arrest team. She then joined the Central Intelligence Agency and focused on national security, working covertly and overseas.

Personal Crossroads

In 2014, she and her spouse, an technical professional, reached a career crossroads. Residing on the Pacific coast, they were contemplating another foreign posting. They took out a world map and inquired of their eldest daughter, then in elementary school, where they should go. Virginia, she answered, because “all our loved ones reside in Virginia”.

Spanberger recalled at her rally: “And so we decided to transition from a path of service to country, to state involvement because she was right. All our relatives are in Virginia.”

Congressional Run

Back in the commonwealth, she volunteered with a grassroots group, which addresses gun violence, and founded a Girl Scout troop. In 2017, she chose to run for Congress, which advisers told her was a “long shot” because the party hadn't had won the congressional seat in 50 years.

“But I observed what Donald Trump was implementing with his authority and how he was dividing communities. And I noticed my representative consistently work against the Affordable Care Act. And I knew I had to step up. So spoiler: I won.”

Moderate Stance

In Washington, she rapidly became part of the centrist group, a alliance of centrist and fiscally moderate Democrats. She concentrated on less visible matters: bringing broadband to rural areas, fighting narcotics trade and support for former troops.

She earned a reputation for working with Republicans and was consistently rated as the most cooperative member of the Virginia delegation. She was vocal about messaging that she believed turned off centrists, cautioning her fellow Democrats against ideological slogans that could be weaponised in contested districts.

Centrist Group

Along with Representatives Elissa Slotkin and an ex-navy pilot, she was dubbed a member of the “pragmatic group” in opposition to the progressive “group” of AOC.

State Leadership Bid

In late 2023, she declared she would not seek re-election for a fourth term and would instead campaign for Virginia's leadership in the next election.

Her campaign centred on ideas of public service, advocacy for education and infrastructure and protection of governing systems. Her intelligence experience lent her credibility on national security issues and she spoke of government work as a vocation instead of a career.

Election Victory

This enabled her to overcome rival candidate her challenger's attacks on cultural issues, including the assertion that Spanberger is an extremist on individual freedoms and health care for transgender people.

The governor-elect, who stated that individual districts should decide whether trans youth can join competitive sports, portrayed her opponent as the contender more out of step with the middle of the commonwealth's citizens.
