The visionary game developer, renowned for co-creating the immensely successful franchise Call of Duty, has tragically died in a traffic collision in the state of California aged 55.

The tragic news was verified by Electronic Arts, the publisher that controls Respawn Entertainment, the development studio which he helped establish.

The celebrated industry figure died after his vehicle was involved in a crash and was engulfed in flames on a freeway in the Los Angeles area on Sunday morning, US media outlets report.

"This is a heartbreaking loss, and our deepest sympathies go to his family and friends, his family, and all those touched by his creative vision," an official with Electronic Arts said.
