This Swine Life: Pig Named 6-7 Pardoned by Miami Dade County Mayor.
While perhaps not at the equivalent scale as granting clemency to Thanksgiving turkeys, but the mayor of Miami-Dade had her own presidential-style act this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She deserves this act of mercy. She has committed zero crimes,” Levine Cava said in a speech with inescapable allusions to the sheer volume of pardons issued since the commencement of a second term in office.
“If we disregard eating six or seven apples per day,” the mayor added. “I hope she experiences a prosperous future away from worry.”
This ceremony, simultaneously observing and challenging the local cultural practice of feasting on pork during the holidays, was founded to replicate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The pig, provided by a first responder, was given its name from the modern linguistic fad of young people exclaiming “six seven” – originating from a musical verse – often for no discernable reason. The trend became so pervasive that a leading lexicon site recently declared “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A New Life
This particular pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a farm sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“This swine clemency has become a beloved tradition to begin the end-of-year celebrations,” said Eric Castellanos, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It embodies the character of Miami: joyful, multicultural, and rooted in traditions that bring people together. Every time, we are proud to celebrate culture and compassion in a way unique to Miami.”
Guests enjoyed a meat-free selection of croquettes and strong coffee as they celebrated Six Seven’s big moment.
