Gareth Southgate has made clear that he is not seeking a comeback in football management, explaining that it would be tough to duplicate the unique sense of purpose he experienced as England’s manager.

He expressed his intention to channel his attention toward supporting young people and combating what he labeled a dominant downbeat story presently found in the country.

Embracing New Avenues Away from Football

In a recent radio interview, Southgate was questioned on speculation linking him with open coaching positions in the Premier League and elsewhere.

“My role with England was not just a job—it was a mission representing my nation,” he answered. “It will be tough to match that experience. After nearly four decades in the game, I’m now exploring new fields where I can contribute positively.”

A Passion for Positive Examples

Leading up to the publication of his new title, his leadership-focused book, he emphasized that he is “very passionate” about setting examples for teenagers, utilizing lessons from his time as England’s men’s football manager from 2016 and 2024, as well as his experiences as a parent.

The leader feels that his time leading the national team, during which the team transformed from being widely disliked to widely supported, holds general lessons.

“We had a huge disconnect with the public when we started,” he said. “Many perceived the squad as arrogant, but we managed to change that perception. I witnessed firsthand how the team could unite individuals from all backgrounds.”

Raising Children and Shaping the Next Generation

Drawing on his family life, Southgate remarked: “You want to give your kids the best possible start, but there is a point when they don’t want to listen to parents any more. I experienced that in my house in the same way everybody else will … but I do think this is an important space for us.”

He went on: “There’s a negative narrative around our country at the moment and we’ve got to give young people hope, we’ve got to give them guidance. We’ve got incredible talent but we need to them to find the right role models, the right friendship groups because those decisions have such a big impact on the rest of their lives.”

Unity Over Division

Southgate insisted that “there is more that unites us [in the UK] than divides us” but that the cultural focus often highlights conflict.

“The reasons for public dissatisfaction are clear,” he commented. “Financial struggles affect numerous communities, fueling calls for transformation. Yet, I’ve observed the capacity to bring the nation together. During the pandemic, I witnessed neighbors helping each other—that’s when the UK excels, demonstrating strength and unity in adversity.”

Southgate’s upcoming publication, titled Dear England, is set to offer further insights on management and country pride drawn from his distinguished time in football.
