Prison Surprise: The Ex-President Jair Bolsonaro Faces Time in Prison
He contested the legal system and the law prevailed.
A couple of months subsequent to receiving a quarter-century plus sentence for seeking to “eradicate” Brazil’s political system, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro finally looks jail-bound.
Expected Imprisonment
The found-guilty plotter – who has been living under home confinement in his residence while a set of legal procedures and petitions play out – is largely predicted to be imprisoned in the next few days, during increasing talk that he will be moved to a infamous top-security facility.
Previous Statements on Prisoners
Throughout Bolsonaro’s long time in politics, the far-right ex- paratrooper displayed scant sympathy for Brazil’s jailed individuals.
“What’s the need to provide these lowlifes a comfortable existence?” he once pondered. “They should just get fucked, period. That's my view.”
On another occasion, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “If you don’t want to end up there, the only thing required is not sexual assault, kidnap or rob.”
Jail Location Speculation
However the prospect of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda prison top-security prison in Brasília has horrified allies, several of whom this week inspected the facility in an obvious attempt to discourage the judiciary from transferring him there.
Senator Lucas, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro’s political party who was part of that quartet, said he anticipated the 70-year-old figure to be imprisoned in the next 10 days and feared his destination could be Papuda.
The senator argued Bolsonaro’s serious intestinal ailments – the result of a life-threatening stabbing during the last presidential campaign – meant it would be risky to keep the former president there. “His condition is highly critical. He cannot to manage if they move him to Papuda … It would be awful,” said the senator, who also expressed concern about overcrowded cells and the condition of jail cuisine.
During his tour Papuda, Lucas recalled observing cells holding 40 inmates: “That is virtually one square metre per detainee.
“We talked to the convicts and they grumble, of course, of the terrible food,” remarked the senator.
Allies Voice Concerns
He is not the lone figure speaking out prior to the ex-leader's anticipated detention.
Writing in a prominent daily, one more backer, the former communications minister Fábio Wajngarten, bemoaned the “brutal” end to Bolsonaro’s “flawless” public service and asserted Brazil was about to experience “the largest wrong in its past”.
“This is an wrong that erodes the hearts of many Brazilian citizens,” Wajngarten wrote.
Divided Public Response
That may be true due to the significant backing Bolsonaro maintains on the right-wing. But his expected imprisonment has also pleased the feelings of many individuals who believe he deserves to be jailed for conspiring to block the elected leader from becoming president – and even conspiring to have him killed.
Reimont Otoni, a politician for the sitting president's allied group, stated: “Nobody wants Bolsonaro to be placed in a dungeon. Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to be put in segregation. Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to lie on concrete. We desire him to obtain proper handling – but respectful treatment in prison. He cannot continue being his own prison warden for his lifetime.”
The congressman noted how Bolsonaro supporters, who have spent years praising the severe handling of prisoners, had unexpectedly realized to their entitlements. “Recently has the extreme right – which has always claimed that civil liberties should not be for offenders – opted to tour a penitentiary to learn what circumstances are truly like,” he stated.
“Bolsonaro is a lawbreaker,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he deserved “shameful, degrading handling”.
Likely Prison Environment
In spite of speculation that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which presently contains about 14,000 inmates, his probable assigned facility seems to be a nearby jail for law enforcement and other “special” detainees known as Papudinha (Minor Papuda).
His potential cell are far more comfortable than those in the larger jail, although still a world away from the luxury Bolsonaro experienced while residing in the spectacular leader's home, about a short distance away.
As per information, the accommodation Bolsonaro could anticipate occupy in Papudinha has about 24 sq metres – roughly the size of vehicle spaces – and includes a 12 sq metre restroom with a water facility and a 130 square foot veranda. “The ex-president might be authorized to have a TV and also a minibar in his room as long as they were donated by his family,” sources indicated.
Political Comments
He criticized the speculated idea to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “a type of payback” on the part of the presiding magistrate who presided over Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will decide his future in the {
