No fewer than 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship government projects.

The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the country's president.

The president reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's strategic goals for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The building of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a significant increase of its role in civilian works. They were built at an accelerated speed, defying expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked ongoing concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party called for an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This pause was requested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."

In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in total accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital projects.
