New York Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the player will recover well after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.

“What reassures me, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn commented. “His wife and child, they are doing well and he will walk away from this just fine.”

It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.

“Don’t know just yet,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, from our conversation, he seemed very positive. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and he’s talking that way.”

Authorities released surveillance images earlier this week of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting is currently under review and police mentioned it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries according to reports.

The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday near the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was admitted to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The assailant escaped.

Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a newborn.

“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, I’m thinking about his kid and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“There is a procedure involved, which I won’t get into, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd hasn’t played in the present campaign, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on 18 August with a shoulder injury that needed an operation.

He joined the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in March and was projected as a significant contributor of an improved special teams group under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on 2 August and had to be helped off.

Boyd has remained around the team all season long while healing from his surgery.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, from Texas, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
