The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Spurs extended their unbeaten run in away games in the Premier League and handed Everton their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced twice from corners in the first half to put their strong form at jeopardy, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the scores a short while after Van de Ven's opener, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of excellent saves to ensure the London club went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing the match official to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves the manager's side up to third in the Premier League, five points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

Everton remain in 14th position and are half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in duties at both ends of pitch

Following a uninspiring midweek performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they managed a only attempts on goal, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Centre-back the Dutchman transformed into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defensive duties, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo handled superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees lacking striker's instinct

The club's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have faded somewhat and fans flocked to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The break in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a massive worry for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of established strikers - had netted only one league goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to contribute to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, despite having space and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

The substitute, too, failed to make an impact after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. Most of the home side's attacks came through the winger and the forward, who tirelessly whipped dangerous balls into the Tottenham penalty area.
