Israeli citizens observe two-year anniversary of 7 October attacks as Gaza ceasefire negotiations proceed
Citizens have come together around the country to mark two years since the Hamas-initiated offensive on October 7th, 2023, as discussions continued in Egypt over a resolution to the war in Gaza.
The assault resulted in more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others captured away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely most lethal day for Jews since the Holocaust.
Israel reacted by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as reliable by the United Nations and other world agencies.
"Our bloodthirsty adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on that day.
He also promised to "realize all the aims of the war: the release of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will not present a danger to Israel".
Remembrance Gatherings Across Israel
The government authorities postponed official commemorations until mid-October - after the conclusion of the festive season - but ceremonies still occurred throughout the country on Tuesday.
A memorial ceremony for the families of people killed in the Hamas incident was organized in the coastal city. Arranged by the families themselves, it was broadcast on Israeli television channels.
Some time earlier, a minute's silence was respected across the country.
Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt
Simultaneously, Israeli and Hamas representatives met in the Egyptian tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of indirect talks to examine the terms of the proposal.
A senior Palestinian official familiar with the negotiations said that an late session of negotiations began at 19:00 Cairo time.
The official explained the morning session ended without significant progress, amid conflicting views over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not resume hostilities after the initial stage of the deal.
He noted that the negotiations are "difficult and have not yet achieve any real breakthrough," but noted that intermediaries are working hard to reduce the gaps between the two sides.
Key Matters in Negotiations
- A lasting truce
- The exchange of the captives still kept by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Arrangements for assistance distribution
- Future governance of the territory
Citizen Reaction
In Tel Aviv's memorial area previously, young Hagar - whose family member survived the attack on the outdoor event, where 378 people were murdered and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - told: "No location seems like home any longer and until each abducted person return no one will have peace of mind."
"When we see everyone home once more, we can breathe anew. Then we can start to rebuild," she added.
Outside the leader's home in Jerusalem, people assembled to express their solidarity for the families of the captives. Israel reports nearly fifty stay in confinement in Gaza, twenty of whom are believed to be living.
Demonstrator a participant stated: "We need do any agreement necessary for the hostages to be released. But we really want assurances that we will be safe."
Research now frequently demonstrate that approximately the majority of Israeli citizens desire the war to finish in as payment for the liberation of the hostages.
Palestinian Conditions
At the site of the gathering, grieving people came together to honor the dead.
From that location, the boom of military attacks and explosions could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers said the intense Israeli attacks persisted.
In the main city, attacks were documented in the dawn of that day in the western district, area and locality districts and in the eastern neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the north-west.
"As the dusk comes, the fear appears with it," relocated urban resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack last year, shared.
"Me and my three children are fearful of the air strikes. During nighttime we are resting together, holding each other, especially my smallest child who puts his head on me the entire evening."
"Every second we look at the news to see the situation. And I'm worried that this truce will not be achieved and that the fighting will return to us."
Health Crisis
Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City announced it had accepted the bodies of half dozen people by the afternoon, including three who died in an Israeli attack in the south part district.
Nasser hospital in the southern city of that area said another two fatalities had been delivered. One of them was lost his life by Israeli soldiers while looking for assistance to the south region, medical staff reported.
