Information Available Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Shooting

No fewer than 16 individuals were killed and over 40 were hurt when gunmen shot at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian police have labeled a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, officials have announced the death toll stands at 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were taken to medical facilities.

The deceased are yet to be formally identified, but investigators think their ages are between 10 and 87 years old.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She described the moments before the attack, stating they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

In a statement, a senior official expressed that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality in the incident, according to reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, many remain under care, with a number in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
