Adult Swim's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Substantial Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.
In October of last year, Adult Swim saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the network introduced a fresh animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a animated take of a serene talk show. During a period often marked by dark humor, this show's sincerity found an audience and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Executive Acclaim
In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and championed its uniquely offbeat style.
"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about following this lovable family go about their daily lives.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to evolve comedy past its long-running sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
What Comes Next
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially be part of that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
